About Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the Terai Arc Landscape, and part of the famous Kumaon forest landscape immortalised by Jim Corbett in his books, Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary spans over 269 square kilometers. Known for its rich biodiversity, it has emerged as one of the most important source population of tigers and other wildlife in Uttarakhand.

Key Highlights of Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary

  • icon Notified in 2012, Nandhaur is the youngest wildlife sanctuary of Uttarakhand.
  • icon Home to over 31 mammal species, 235 bird species, and 277 plant species.
  • icon Named after the Nandhaur River that flows for approximately 30 km through the sanctuary, this sanctuary is part of the Haldwani Forest Division.

Nandhaur Wildlife Sanctuary was carved out of the heart of Nandhaur valley – nearly 1,000 sq km of prime forest, drained by the Nandhaur and Ladhya rivers, with the mighty Sarda river at the eastern end and the Gaula on the west. Part of the Haldwani Forest Division, one of the oldest forest divisions of north India, the sanctuary straddles across the districts of Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar (Rudrapur). With landscapes that once inspired Jim Corbett's writings, and home to the locales where many of his famous stories are set, this sanctuary forms a vital link between the Protected Areas of India and Nepal.
